70’s Flashback

It is good how many kitchens are still decked out in their amazing kitchen decor, the brown laminated cupboards and with bright orange tones or even worse the lime green hues that remind you of a bad baby nappy. The orange does take the cake though, and it is generally splashed everywhere from the carpet to the workbenches, at the time it was the height of fashion but now unless you want to indulge in some pharmaceutical enhancements it is just overbearing.

Rental houses are the worst culprits, landlords don’t want to go through the hassle of doing a makeover so they leave the house as is, they could at least do a kitchen facelift Melbourne if they don’t want to go through a major renovation. The kitchens aren’t the worst bit in the old houses however, each room is painted in a different hellish colour and the laundry and bathroom a lovely green, once walked into a rental that looked like a carnival had been the decorating theme. Bright red kitchen, one blue bedroom, one orange and another purple, the mandatory green for the toilet, bathroom and laundry and the outdoor area out the back was one big bamboo theme. To this day I cannot walk into a kitchen that has red in it and not have flashbacks, it was hideous and even though the price was right, I couldn’t bring myself to move in there.

I was afraid the colour scheme might send me mad and I would murder my family in my sleep, I was waiting for the walls to start bleeding and redrum to appear around the house and who ever thought shag carpet was a good idea, probably only those that were going to actually shag on the damn stuff. All I know is, it collects all the dust and debris and it is nearly impossible to get all of it out, you have to spend twice as long vacuuming just to be sure you are doing a halfway decent job.

It doesn’t take much to get in some contractors and give the old place a bit of a lift, resurfacing doesn’t cost as much as a complete reno and the old house will look ten times better, please, please for all the renters out there who simply want to have a decent home to live in and not feel like they are part of a 70’s sitcom, do some maintenance on the investment properties. We are not asking that you spend thousands and thousands of dollars, just a little cash to keep our eyeballs from bugging out every time we wake up and stare at the blue ceiling and the purple walls with the orange shag carpet in our bedroom. We want to be able to walk in our kitchens without having to shut our eyes and cook by feel, so the bright red doesn’t make our eyes bleed and to have a little style in our lives, that isn’t influenced by someone who was probably on LSD at the time.
